Japanese Maples

  • Acer palmatum Katsura
  • Acer palmatum
  • Acer palmatum dissectum Garnet

Japanese Maples are small, eye-catching trees with beautiful leaves. They are also called Acers – this is their botanical name – although Acers include all forms of maple including Field Maple (Acer campestre), Red Maples (Acer rubrum), Norway Maples (Acer platanoides) and the Canadian Maple (Acer saccharum). Many, but not all, varieties of Japanese Maple belong to the species Acer palmatum.

Japanese Maples can be a fantastic, small, specimen tree in a lawn or in a garden border.  Alternatively, they are good for keeping in pots or containers. We have successfully kept one in a pot for 20 years.

The ‘Dissectum’ varieties of Japanese Maple have beautiful deeply-cut leaves and grow into a mound of up to 1.2m (4ft) tall rather than a tall tree. These are also good in garden borders or in pots, as specimens in the lawn or next to ponds.

At Greenshutters Garden Centre, we sell different varieties of Japanese Maple with a range of colour leaves from different shades of green to yellow, pink, red, purple and orange. Some varieties such as Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’ and ‘Shindeshojo’ have beautiful golden or bright red leaves in the spring. Many such as ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Inabe Shidare’ have bright red, orange or yellow leaves in the autumn. There are also varieties such as the Coral Bark Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sangokaku’) that have bright red bark in the winter months.

The number and different sizes we stock depends on the time of year, we generally have more available in the spring and autumn.
