Fruit & Ornamental Trees

At Greenshutters Garden Centre, we have one of the largest stocks of ornamental and fruit trees in the area.  Our stock varies throughout the year but we have a good selection all year round.

Ornamental Trees

If you are looking for ornamental trees then come and have a look and we will be happy to give advice on which trees would suit your garden, whether it is a Crab Apple on a dwarf rootstock for a smaller garden, or a Purple Beech for a larger garden, we can help.

Flowering Cherries

Flowering CherriesFlowering Cherries are one of our favourites and we always have a good selection available. The provide masses of flower in the spring often fabulous autumn colours in the leaves in the autumn. The beautiful Prunus ‘Kanzan’ with it’s spectacular double-pink flowers that flowers in April and/or May is a superb tree. The fantastic Prunus ‘Tai Haku’ or Great White Cherry is another stunning tree in spring.

The winter-flowering cherries, Prunus ‘Autumnalis’ and ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ flower during mild spells in the winter and early spring. The flowering cherry Mount Fuji (Prunus ‘Shirotae’), has horizontal branches with double-white flowers in spring. Varieties such as Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ and Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ have purple-leaves to provide interest after the flowering has gone and Prunus serrula has amazing shiny, coppery-brown, peeling bark.

Crab Apples

Crab ApplesCrab Apples are another tree that provides spring and autumn interest with beautiful apple blossom in the spring and masses of crab apples in the autumn that can be made into crab apple jelly.

The are also good a pollinating apple trees. We always have a number of varieties available.

Birch & Beech Trees

Birch and Beech

Birch, with it’s white bark, looks particularly stunning in the winter months against a blue sky.  Along with the common Silver Birch (Betula pendula), we have selected varieties that have a brighter, whiter peeling bark such as Betula utilis jacquemontii and ‘Snow Queen’.

Birch also have stunning yellow leaves in the autumn.  The weeping birch, Betula pendula ‘Youngii’ is fantastic for a smaller garden.

Beech comes in many forms, the common green-leaved beech makes a magnificent tree or a fantastic hedge. Purple-leaved beech is a majestic tree in a large garden and the selected cultivar, Fagus sylvatica ‘Riversii’ has the largest and darkest leaves of all the beech.  The upright-growing (fastigiate) Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple’ is also a magnificent tree.

Maple (Acers)

Maple Acres

The smaller Japanese Maples are excellent for a small garden or for keeping in pots or containers.  The new leaves in the spring are beautiful and the autumn colours stunning.

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ has purple leaves throughout the spring and summer that turn red in the autumn.  Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ has green leaves for the spring and summer that turn to the probably the most brilliant scarlet red of all the maples in the autumn.  The Coral-Bark Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sangokaku’ has bright coral-red stems in the winter.

The larger-leaved Maples such as the Norway Maples, Acer ‘Crimson King’ and ‘Drummondii’ are excellent medium-sized specimen trees.  The leaves of the Red Maple, Acer rubrum ‘Somerset’ turn a fantastic red in the autumn, as its name suggests.

Magnolia

Magnolia

The “Magnolias” are amongst the most magnificent of flowering trees and shrubs and they herald spring in the garden.  The most popular and one of the best varieties is Magnolia x soulangeana with its large tulip-shaped, white flowers that are rose-purple at the base.

It will eventually form a majestic tree of about 25ft (8m) tall if left untrimmed.

There are smaller varieties such as the Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata), Magnolia lilliflora ‘Nigra‘ and Magnolia ‘Susan’ that only grow to 8-10ft (3m) tall.  These are suitable for the back of a large border or make a superb specimen shrub in the middle of a lawn.

One of our favourites at Greenshutters Garden Centre is Magnolia ‘Leonard  Messel’ with its star-like lilac-pink flowers.  The relatively new introduction, Magnolia ‘Limelight’, with its creamy-yellow flowers is also a beautiful  addition to any garden.
