August was another very dry month but we have had a couple of days of rain now to help green up the grass. The garden will be grateful if we get a few more.

Our winter hardy Violas, Pansies and Cyclamen are now in flower and will look good all winter and spring next year. If your pots, hanging baskets or borders need some fresh colour, we have plenty available.

There are also many autumn flowering herbaceous perennials available such as Echinacea (Coneflowers), Salvia, Japanese Anemones and Rudbeckia.

As September brings much-needed rainfall, autumn is nearly here and with it, an important planting season, especially for trees.

Autumn planting gives a tree a head start in the race to grow. Cooler temperatures, rainfall, and soil that still retains summer warmth allow newly planted trees to establish strong root systems before winter. By spring, autumn-planted trees are already settled and ready to burst into growth, while spring-planted trees are only just getting started.

This month Greenshutters Garden Club Members can get 20% off a tree. You can choose from our new batch of Greenshutters’ home-grown fruit and ornamental trees, in sizes from small to large. Don’t worry if you can’t get a tree in your car, we deliver locally every week.

Autumn is a great time to start planting bulbs that flower in the spring such as Daffodils (Narcissi), Tulips, Crocus, Hyacinth and Alliums. We have a new range available (see below) including indoor prepared Hyacinth and Paperwhite Narcissi (Daffodils) that can be planted now and kept indoors for flowering around Christmas time.
