Greenshutters Garden Centre Newsletter September 2025
August was another extremely dry month (the sixth in a row) but we have now had some welcome rain to the relief of all our lawns and garden plants.
Our autumn bedding plants such as Pansies and Violas are now ready and look colourful. They are winter hardy so are fine to plant in pots, hanging baskets and borders for colour throughout the winter and spring.
September is a good month to plant trees, shrubs and cottage garden plants as the soil is still holding the warmth from the summer and the rain is now rehydrating the soil.
It is also the season to aerate, feed and re-sow parts of your lawn especially if they have suffered from the dry summer.

Exciting News! Greenshutters Nurseries is growing again, we are currently installing 50 new tree rows to expand our tree-growing capacity. We will be growing more native trees and hedging plants.

Spring Flowering Bulbs
It is September already! As much as we don’t want the blazing summer to be over just yet, the recent blustery weather has reminded us that autumn is not far away, and that it is time to be thinking about planting spring flowering bulbs. Our first batch of spring flowering bulbs are now in stock.

We have a very wide range to choose from. Classic favourites like Daffodils (Narcissus), Tulips and Crocuses bring their jewel-like colours to our pots and flower beds from January to April, bringing with them happiness and food for the soul in those chilly months, while Alliums flower later in May with metallic purplish glitter.

Other early spring flowering bulbs like Snowdrops are loved for their modest and simple beauty, while Irises radiate something luxurious with their deep rich purples and blues. Camassias are less well-known, but they put on a sparkling show of cool blue starry flowers.
