Greenshutters Garden Centre Newsletter May 2025

April was a fabulous month for the garden with the long hours of sunshine benefitting both plants and people and encouraging us all to venture outdoors. The new flush of fresh growth in our gardens is making them look lush and colourful.

Our plant area is also full of colour (see images below) and we now have plenty of patio pot, hanging basket and bedding plants available but they are selling fast. Tomato, cucumber, courgette, pepper and other vegetable plants are also available, if you didn’t get round to sowing seed earlier in the year.

Hanging baskets and hanging basket refills are now available. If you would like your baskets refilled, please bring them in and let us know what you would like in them and we will do our best to create a stunning display for you.

Additionally, we have plenty of flowering herbaceous perennial plants, shrubs and one of the largest selections of trees in the south west.

Fresh stock is arriving daily, and our friendly team is ready to offer expert advice and answer any questions you have. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, come visit us—we’re here to help.

Rhododendrons

Rhododendrons are some of the brightest bloomers in the garden. They can grow in borders (if you have acid/ericaceous soil) or are happy in pots.

Rhododendron 'Kalinka'

Rhododendron ‘Kalinka’

If, when you hear the name Rhododendron, you imagine an invasive plant, you could be forgiven for thinking that having any Rhododendron in your garden is a bad idea. However, the invasive type is just one species called Rhododendron ponticum which we do not sell at Greenshutters. The Rhododendrons we sell are non-invasive.

Rhododendron yakushimanum

Our Rhododendrons are currently flowering in a multitude of colours. There are the small (dwarf) Rhododendrons such as ‘Golden Torch’ with its pink buds that open to pale yellow-cream flowers, the ruby red ‘Dopey’, the pink ‘Sneezy’ and the almost translucent pinky-white Rhododendron yakushimanum.

There are also medium or larger growing varieties including ‘Wilgen’s Ruby’, ‘Cunningham’s White’, pink ‘Kalinka’ and softer yellow ‘Elsie Straver’.

There are so many reasons to grow Rhododendrons. Their bold flowers grab your attention and you can grow them in sun or shade as long as they get plenty of moisture. There are also deciduous Rhododendrons, called Azaleas, one of which is the very fragrant yellow-flowered Rhododendron luteum.

Rhododendrons also fit very well in a woodland setting, they look stunning in pots, and they require very little looking after. The only thing you must do is make sure they are growing in acidic soil or ericaceous compost.
