Greenshutters Garden Centre Newsletter February 2026
The days are finally drawing out again and, thankfully, the day length increases quickly at this time of year. I didn’t think we could top last January’s rainfall but we actually ended up with 45% more rain this year (191mm at Greenshutters).
Our gardens are coming back to life, with masses of Snowdrops in full bloom and Daffodils beginning to show their colour. We have potted bulbs available, and Snowdrops are usually more successful when planted this way.
The garden centre at Greenshutters is beginning to fill up with plants once again, and throughout February we’ll have an increasing selection ready for sale including lots of fresh herbaceous perennials, shrubs and climbers. You’ll also find violas, pansies and primroses available.
February is the ideal time to start sowing the seeds of many vegetable crops. We stock a wide range of vegetable seeds, along with seed potatoes and onion, shallot and garlic sets. We also have lots of new bulbs in stock to plant now for summer flowering such as Dahlia, Begonia, Canna, Alstroemeria and Agapanthus.
Now is still a great time to plant trees and hedging, and we have one of the largest ranges in the South West, including native and evergreen varieties.
Let’s hope the rain subsides and we get to enjoy some warm February sunshine. We hope to see you soon.
Roger and all the team at Greenshutters Garden Centre.

Hellebore Cinderella
David Austin Roses
We have David Austin roses back in stock and now is a good time to plant. Known for their beautifully shaped flowers, we have chosen varieties for fragrance. They can be grown with other roses in a dedicated rose bed or mixed with herbaceous perennials to provide extra colour and fragrance in a border.

David Austin Rose – Gertrude Jekyll
We have shrub roses that grow to around 4ft (1.2m), and which include old favourites like the elegantly pink ‘Gertrude Jekyll’; the calmingly white ‘Tranquility’; and the luminous orange pink ‘The Lark Ascending’.

David Austin Rose – The Lark Ascending
There are also striking new additions like ‘Summer Song’ which has hot, tropical red blooms that really sing out. ‘Kew Gardens’ has masses of simple, single white flowers that make it look like it’s covered in snow. Also, ‘Young Lycidas’ has huge, cup-shaped flowers of glossy magenta, deep pink and lilac.

David Austin Rose – Summer Song
There is also a selection of climbing roses. ‘Bathsheba’ grows up to 10ft (3m) high and has distinctive flowers that are tangerine orange in the centre and pale orange on the outer petals. ‘Wollerton Hall’ grows slightly higher up to 12ft (almost 4m), and its subtle shades are of the softest peach.

David Austin Rose – The Generous Gardener
However, my favourite David Austin Climbing Rose is ‘The Generous Gardener’. It has masses of fragrant pale pink flowers that it keeps producing for most of the summer.

David Austin Rose – Princess Alexander of Kent
All our David Austin Roses or traditional roses make a fantastic addition to any garden. They also make the perfect gift for birthdays, anniversaries or any other occasion.
